Excellence Awards 2017 - Best Trade Bank in Latin America: Santander

Awards | 1 August 2017

Latin America

Santander continues to be the most widely represented bank across Latin America, with operations in countries ranging from Argentina and Mexico, to Brazil and Puerto Rico - a key contributing factor as the bank reclaimed the award with votes garnered from a diverse pool of voters.

The bank demonstrated its commitment to the continent with notable deals across a variety of industries in 2016, acting as co-mandated lead arranger in a six-year US$378m term loan for Argentinian oil and gas trader, AXION Energy.

Santander took the same role in a 15-year US$111m buyer credit facility for Enel Green Power's Brazilian subsidiary in December 2016, which is being used for the construction of a solar park.

"We are very proud to have won this TFR award for best trade finance bank in Latin America said Rogier Schulpen, global head of trade and working capital solutions at Santander.

"One of the things I'm particularly proud of is the innovative thinking that I see in the Santander trade teams. The trade finance industry is changing fast and we need to keep adapting ourselves to this new environment.

"While resistance is the normal reaction to change, I see so many people in our teams trying to capitalise on the opportunities that are arising by establishing digital communication channels with clients, developing new trade products, setting partnerships with fintechs, and utilising big data analytics," he added.

Runners up: HSBC and Citi (7 banks were nominated).
